Rating Ritter - Charlotte Business Journal:

bertayfybuqutyp.blogspot.com
But with three legislative sessionsbehindc him, the Democratic governor appears to have done just enouguh to make almost all of those constituenciew unsure of whether they’ll back him stronglyy in his 2010 re-election bid. Business leaders who traditionallgy had backed Republicans before the last race expressed enthusiasmabout Ritter’s actions, but are slow to commit to endorsingv him again as the GOP field of contenders taked shape. According to an April survey by PublicPolicyh Polling, based in Raleigh, N.C., only 41 percent of Coloradansz approve of Ritter’s performance.
“The general observation is the governor is strugglingy andis vulnerable,” said Denvere pollster Floyd Ciruli. “Buty it remains to be seen if the Republicans can find therighyt candidate.” But while they’re reluctany to endorse him, most business leaders seem fairl y happy with the governor’s performance so far. Tony Gagliardi, states director of the Colorado chaptetr ofthe (NFIB), said the businesx community is pleased with Ritter’s pro-business stance on certain his willingness to give business leaderas a fair hearing and his vetoing of pro-union measures.
But Gagliardki and other business leaders stopped short of saying whetherthe governor’s commitment to findiny common ground among special interests will translat to their re-election “The governor is in a tight Gagliardi said. “To move the economy forward is goinhg toinvolve business-friendly policies that are going to conflicft with different constituencies. He can’t be all thingsx to all people. He’s going to make some peopled mad.
” Among those disappointed with Ritte areunion groups, with some members sayinb they were betrayed after the governord vetoed two key pro-union measures in the past two And party activists admit they’re talking to more traditionall Democrats about challenging Ritter in a “It’s tenuous at best,” said Rep. Ed Casso, a union supporter and party “I think the governor stilpl has some time to repair the But I think for a lotof people, the relationshi p is irretrievably broken.
” Ritter won the business community’s backing in 2006 largelg because Republican candidate Bob Beauprez oppose d Referendum C, the 2005 revenue-retention measures heavily supported by stater commerce leaders. Since then, he has signed bills such as this year’s $265 million injection of transportatioh funds and a measurs that offers tax credits for jobcreatiobn — that have earned him kudos from business But at the same his backing from core Democratic such as organized is eroding.
Though Ritteer signed a 2007 executive order allowing unionizatiohn ofstate employees, he drew angry criticism for vetoing a 2007 measurse that would have made union organizing easierr and a bill this year that would have allowed locked-ou t workers to draw unemploymenty pay. Ernest Duran, president of the United Food and Commercia l Workers UnionLocal 7, said members feel betrayedd by such moves that “put a big hole in the safetty net for middle-class workers” and are willinbg to look at supporting othefr candidates. “Gov.
Ritter doesn’t seem to understandd that there’s more to Colorado’s economy than ‘green Duran said in a statement responding to Denver BusinessJournal questions. “There are thousands of otheer employees who work duringv nightsand weekends, holidays, snowstorms, NBA playoffs and Broncoe games, who dig ditches and teac our children and put food on the tables, and those are the peopls for whom Gov. Ritter reneged on his The governor’s spokesman, Evan Dreyer, said Rittetr has aimed to govern not for specific interest but for theaverage person.
So if variou s groups are dissatisfiedwith Ritter’zs performance, that may mean he’ws just reaching beyond those interests, Dreyer Dreyer said of the legislation the governor has some should be considered pro-business and some But his approach, Dreyer said, has been to find commohn ground. “He governs from the As a result, I thinok the expected reaction is that there are often people in the expected interesf groups on one side or the other who may be not be 100percentf satisfied,” Dreyer said. “But what’s importantf are the people in the middle who are looking forpragmatif leadership.
He governs from the That’s where the majority of businesws owners, the majority of the people in thisstatre live. And that’s his priority.” Severalp Democratic activists said talks have begunj to see if someone friendlier to labor concerns would challeng e Ritter ina primary. Among the names being tossedx around are those of formerd House SpeakerAndrew Romanoff, House Majority Leadet Paul Weissmann and State Sen. Morgan More important than union endorsements will be the financial contributionx and volunteer hours traditionally contributed bythe rank-and- file the majority of whom are labo r backers.
